GAD Treatment in Melbourne

Find Calm & Confidence

Compassionate, evidence-based GAD treatment in Melbourne with AHPRA-registered psychologists — helping you quiet persistent worry, ease physical tension, and feel more in control of your day.

How GAD Affects Daily Life

GAD can show up as constant, hard-to-switch-off worry that follows you from task to task — interrupting sleep, straining relationships, and making it difficult to relax even when nothing is actually wrong. Many people with GAD describe believing that worrying somehow helps prevent bad things from happening — a pattern that keeps the cycle going rather than resolving it.

Working with an experienced GAD psychologist helps you understand what’s maintaining the worry and build a path back to calm. Our GAD counselling provides personalised, evidence-based support for chronic worry, panic, and the physical tension that often comes with it. GAD can also emerge or intensify during pregnancy and the postpartum period — a presentation our psychologists are experienced in supporting. Read more about anxiety in women →

Understanding GAD

What is Generalised Anxiety Disorder?

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is one of the most common anxiety presentations, characterised by persistent, excessive worry that isn’t limited to one specific situation. Unlike the normal stress that comes with a single event — a job interview, a medical test, a difficult conversation — GAD tends to move from one concern to the next: work, health, finances, relationships, or everyday decisions can all become sources of ongoing worry.

Everyday worry is a normal part of life and can even be useful — it helps us prepare and problem-solve. GAD becomes a clinical concern when worry is:

Persistent — occurring most days for six months or more
Difficult to control, even when you recognise it's disproportionate
Wide-ranging, rather than tied to one specific trigger
Accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscle tension, fatigue, or restlessness
Disruptive to work, relationships, sleep, or daily functioning

GAD affects an estimated 2 to 3% of Australian adults in any given year, and is more commonly diagnosed in women than men. For some, symptoms begin in childhood or adolescence; for others, GAD develops later in life, often following a period of prolonged stress.

The Worry Cycle

Understanding the Patterns That Keep GAD Going

GAD is maintained by more than just the worry itself. Many people believe, often without realising it, that worrying is a way of staying prepared or preventing something bad from happening. In reality, this belief is what keeps the cycle active — the brain treats the worry as necessary, so it never fully switches off. A psychologist can help you identify a pattern, understand what’s driving it, and build practical tools to interrupt it.

What GAD treatment can help you do:

Understand your worry triggers and build effective coping strategies
Challenge the belief that worry keeps you or others safe
Restore emotional balance, strengthen resilience, and support long-term mental health
Explore deeper emotional patterns with approaches such as Schema Therapy where longer-standing worry cycles are present

A Common Overlap

GAD & Depression: Understanding The Overlap

GAD frequently co-occurs with depression — research suggests a significant proportion of people experiencing one will, at some point, also experience the other. Persistent worry and low mood can reinforce each other: chronic anxiety often leads to exhaustion and withdrawal, while depression can intensify worry about the future. Our psychologists are experienced in identifying when both presentations are present and building a treatment plan that addresses each appropriately, rather than treating them in isolation.

FAQ

Common Questions About GAD Treatment

How is GAD different from normal worry?

The key differences are intensity, frequency, and impact. Normal worry is tied to a specific situation and passes once it’s resolved, while GAD involves worry that shifts between topics, is hard to control, and affects daily functioning, sleep, or relationships.

What are the symptoms of GAD?

Common symptoms include excessive worry, muscle tension, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and trouble sleeping. Symptoms are typically present most days for at least six months.

What is the GAD-7, and will I need to complete one?

The GAD-7 is a brief, widely used screening questionnaire that helps clinicians understand the severity of generalised anxiety symptoms. Your psychologist may use it as part of your initial assessment to help guide your treatment plan — it is not a diagnostic tool on its own.

Can GAD be treated without medication?

Yes. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) both have strong evidence for GAD and are effective for many people without medication. Where symptoms are more severe, or where GAD is contributing to depression, a combined approach may be discussed with one of our psychiatrists.

How long does GAD treatment take?

This varies, but many people begin to notice meaningful change within 8 to 12 sessions. Treatment length depends on the complexity of the presentation and whether other conditions, like depression, are also present.

Can children experience GAD?

Yes. GAD can begin in childhood or adolescence, often presenting as excessive worry about school, friendships, or family. Our psychologists provide age-appropriate support for younger clients experiencing anxiety.

Is GAD common?

Yes. GAD affects an estimated 2 to 3% of Australian adults in any given year, and is more commonly diagnosed in women than men.

Can I access GAD treatment online?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in Australia, alongside in-person appointments at our Armadale clinic.
